Careers in Construction Month - Darren Carter

They say the “apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” and in this case, they may be right. The Carter family has been in the construction industry for at least four generations. Darren’s great-grandfather helped build Plymouth, Kansas, and his father, until recent, owned a construction company. It was a natural choice for Darren to follow in the footsteps of his family.

After graduating from Kansas State University, Darren joined a small construction company to learn all aspects of construction. He tried his hand at being a laborer, carpenter, superintendent, project manager, regional director, and owner’s rep. His career paths have led him to working on construction projects in the US, England, France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic, while also helping plan business expansion into Eastern Europe, China, Kazakhstan, Singapore, and Australia. By exploring the different construction career paths, Darren was able to determine what he enjoyed most. Ultimately, he landed on becoming an estimator.

Darren explains, “estimators are tasked to solve giant puzzles. Each job is unique. We have the challenge of taking a blueprint and pricing the job all while trying to come in as the lowest bidder.”

Advice to those wanting to become an estimator

“Understand that you do not need to know everything. Ask for help when you need it, there are no stupid questions.”
